Man Wins $5 Million After Accidentally Pushing the Wrong Button on Lottery Machine

When a stranger bumps into you, you might get an apology or ignored. Shawn Leonard got $5 million.

    Written by Alex Lomartire

Two months ago, Leonard had just put $5 into a lottery ticket vending machine at a gas station in Lindeville when “some aggressive person” bumped into him, causing him to accidentally press the wrong number on the machine.

“They just ran into me. They didn’t say a thing and just walked out the door,” Leonard said.

Leonard usually purchases expensive tickets, but the accidental button push meant he’d bought a $20 100X Scratchers ticket. Leonard said he was irritated because he spent his last $20 on a ticket he didn’t want. But once he was in his car, he started scratching the ticket, and realized he’d won the top prize of $5 million.

“I almost threw it out, but I got on the freeway and kept looking down at the ticket, and I almost crashed my car,” Leonard said. “I decided to pull over and look at it again. I scanned it with the lottery app five times to make sure it was real and kept thinking: at least I got my $20 back.”

Leonard said he is going to use his winnings to buy a lifetime’s supply of alcohol and cigarettes.
